Merging psychometrics with econometrics

Crudely speaking, non-experimental researchers in education and psychology have been more concerned with measuring the key construct on the y-side of the equation precisely, than building a plausibly causal prediction model on the x-side.

Educational economists have had the opposite focus, counting "barrels of oil" on the y-side, while being obsessed with plausibly causal prediction models on the x-side.

In the current presentation, I show an example of a framework for combining these two traditions. I present two examples.

One is a paper I have worked on with Erik Eliassen at Oslo Metropolitan University, we show that children who enter early childhood education and care later in their second year of life are rated higher on social competence by their teachers at the age of 3.

In another example I have done with Margaret Owen at UT Dallas and other colleagues, we theist the hypothesis that parents get less sensitive in the interaction with their children when their kids attend ECEC (NICHD ECCRN 1999; 2003). There is no evidence that this is the case, at least not in Norway.
