Everybody with an interest in mixed methods in educational research.

  • Day 1 is a seminar with a presentation by the lecturer and following questions and discussion.
  • Day 2 takes form as a workshop in which participants can present and discuss their own work.

Description

The course introduces the mixed methods tradition with an explicit focus on its implementation and relevance for educational research. Unlike many courses in mixed methods, the course will focus less on “why” and more on “how” mixed methods have been and can be used in educational research.

The course provides an overview of the mixed methods tradition including purpose and characteristics of mixed methods research, types of research questions typically addressed, mixed methods designs and different stages of combining and integrating methods, data collection, analysis, quality criteria, and validity. In addition to traditional qualitative and quantitative methods, the course pays explicit attention to methods, which are common to educational studies, such as classroom observations and experimental research.

Throughout the course, we will reflect on and discuss the possibilities and limitations of mixed methods in educational research.

Day 1: December 17 2018, 13.00-16.00

The first day is organized as a seminar with a talk by the lecturer followed by questions and discussion from the participants.

Day 2: December 18 2018, 13.00-16.00

The second day is organized as a more hands-on workshop in which the participants can present and discuss their own work. Contributions at all stages of the research process are welcome.

Participants will be asked to indicate if they wish to present when they sign up.

On 17 December we will be serving Glögg and Æbleskiver after the course.
